We labor under the belief that we can influence the future. This belief is both true in one sense and completely deluded in another.
It is true because cause and effect are related. It is delusional because Cause is only knowable after the Effect has occurred.
In other words, the link between a specific Cause and a specific Effect is only absolute backwards in time.
The fundamental absurdity of this cult was obvious to me. And yet my two closest friends were completely taken in by it. Why? Why could I see it and they couldn’t?
I’m trying to show the real world by showing a different world. The real world is so much bigger than we can see it as. Just to get through our days, we have to imagine it is small and plain and obeys rules.
We humans never limit our own stories to the raw events. We include our own actions, emotions, desires, thoughts, and beliefs into our stories. And we make guesses about the other person. We tell stories about what they were doing, feeling, wanting, believing, and thinking.
The number of times that slavers granted freedom to their slaves is vanishingly small. Almost without exception, freedom was won. Freedom was fought for. Freedom was wrested from the hands of the slavers. Freedom was assumed and then taken.
It’s 2:00 in the morning. Your mind is racing and you can’t get it to stop. You have to be up in 4 hours. You do everything you can think of to turn off the noise in your head, without success. No matter what you do, your mind won’t stop and your body won’t sleep. Tomorrow is going to suck.
